Ostrovsky Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

Ostrovsky, Ostrovskaya, Ostrovskyi, Ostrovskaia, Ostrovska, Ostrov:

(Russian, Belorussian, Ukranian, etc.,), From 'Ostrov' [Island] + the common Russian suffix '-sky'/'-skaya'. [sometimes translated or feminized as '-skyi', '-skia', and '-ska', and sometimes even without a suffix.] I have found multiple places named 'Ostrov' in mainly Eastern-European countries, which includes Romania, Slovakia, and possibly 2 in Czechia [the Czech Republic, and if not 2 locations, then most likely 1.], but mainly one in Western-Russia, just shy of 20 miles [~32 kilometres] away from the border with Latvia, ~85 miles from the border with Belarus [~140 kilometres], ~200 miles from Saint Petersburg [~320 kilometres], and 370 miles from Moscow [~600 kilometres]. It literally translates to 'island' in Russian. [Island = остров, остров converts to 'Ostrov'.] Why this surname is most commonly found in the region of Kursk in [located in South-Western Russia] is beyond me. [Might be from some history of people immigrating from other locations in Europe named 'Ostrov' or simply from ancestors moving; possibly just given to a dweller near an island, which would also explain the popularity found in Belarus [and kind of Ukraine] as well.] Not to be confused with Polish 'Ostrowski' and 'Ostrowska', despite meaning the same thing.
