Osuya is a surname of Delta-Igbo origin, which comes from osu-iyah, meaning 'deep-suffering', or 'burden-bearer'.
A long time ago, a warrior was believed to have migrated from the eastern part of Nigeria, Anambra to be precise. He was totally against the cruel treatment often given to slaves in those days. So he wanted to rescue as many as he could. He began his rescue mission and eventually settled in the Southern part of the country - Delta State. This warrior took it upon himself to cater and care for all this slaves as he rescued then. At a point, the burden became too much for the warrior to bear but the slaves were ready to bear and share in the burden. They preferred to suffer as a freeman than as a slave. Till his death, he did everything within his power to provide for everyone under his care. He was known as a burden bearer and so was the name immortalised in his honour.
