This surname is derived from Otterburn iear Morebattle, Roxberghshire. Alan de Ottyburne was secretary to Murdoch, duke of Albany in 1426 (RMS., II, 48). William de Ottyrburn, a witness in Glasgow in 1454 (LCD., 176) is most probably the William de Otterburne who is recorded as bailie of Glasgow in 1456 and again in 1463 (REG., 380,389). John de Ottirburn, rector of the parish church of Liberton in 1456 (LSC., p. 165) may be the John de Otirburne, canon of the church of Glasgow in 1467, and in following years provost of the Collegiate Church of Methven (REG., 391,392). Master Nicholas Otyrburne or Ottyrburne, Clerk of Rolls in 1456 (Scon, 220), vicar of St. Giles's Cherch in Edinbergh, and secretary to James II had safe conducts to enter England in 1455, 1456, and 1459 (Bain, IV. 1271, 1276, 1301). Henry Oterburn was a witness in Glasgow in 1468 (REG., 392), Alexander of Otyrburn was bailie of Ayr, 1471 (Friars Ayr, p. 54), Andrew Otterburn had a remission in 1489 for his share as one of the holders of Dumbarton Castle against the king (APS., XII, p. 34), and Gilbert Ottirburn was parson of Slains in Aberdeenshire in 1493 (ADC.) Thomas Otirburne was servitor to the commendator of Arbroath in 1524 (RAA., II, 578), John Otterburn was tenant in Govan in 1526 (Rental), Adam Otterburn was provost of Edinburgh in 1534 (Seafo. Supp., 801), and a commission for the trial of John Ottirburne was issued in 1557 (ER., XIX, p. 417). Ottirbyrn 1609.
