Ottwell Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Otewel.' Halliwell under larder quotes: 'Thowas Otuwel fol of mood And faught as he were wood.' - Romance of Otuel.

A popular favourite in its time, but now, I fear, quite obsolete as a font-name, but found till the beginning of the last century. An early legendary name (v. Yonge". As a surname it still survives the ravages of time. Ottiwell, natural son of Hugh Lupus, Earl of Chester, was tutor to the children of Henry I, who perished at sea in 1120 (Lower). Perhaps this may account for the popularity of the baptismal name in Cheshire. Ottiwell Higgynbotham gave evidence in 1522 as to the boundary of Marple (Earwaker's East Cheshire, ii. 53).

1549. Otewell Shallcrosse: Earwaker's East Cheshire.

Ottiwell Worsley, temp. Henry VI: ibid.

Ottiwell Rowbotham: ibid.

1564. Married — William Ottiwell and Margret Street: St. Mary Aldermary (London).

1580. Baptised — William, s. Otuell Rilance: Reg. Wigan, Lancashire.

— Married — John Otwell and Joane Smith: St. Antholin (London).Stolen from Fore bears

1587. Robert Rychardson and Magdalen Ottwell: Marriage Lic (London).

1588. Ottiwell Hodgkinson, of Manchester: Wills at Chester.

1607. Buried — Ralph Ottewell, clockworker: St. Thomas the Apostle (London).

1639. Othowell Merverell: Reg. Royal Coll. Phys.: N. & Q. 1857.

I could give many other instances of the font-name as well as surname, but these will suffice.
