This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Ughtred.' Domesday Book, Uctred. One of the earliest priors of Hexham was 'Uthred erl Killer sune' (Priory of Hexham, Surt. Soc). 'Uhtred ... gathered an army, rescued Durham, and gained a signal victory over the Scots.' This was a famous Earl of Northumberland. Hence we find the surname in that district (v. Freeman's Norman Conquest).
