This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Utting,' a long-forgotten personal name.
UTTINC: A long forgotten personal name, from Old English Utting, i.e. "Utta's son." A man named Utting may have given name to Ittingston near Huntly, Aberdeenshire, in 1534 Uttinstoun. A charter of 1277 was witnessed by Alan, son of Huting, seneschal of Buchan (Macdonald, Place names of west Aberdeenshire, s. v.). Hutting, "marescallus" of the bishop of Moray, witnessed a charter by the bishop confirming the gift of the church of Deveth to the church of the Holy Trinity of Spyny, c. 1202-24 (REM., p. 61). Utting Cachepol held a toft in the vill of Inverbervyn, now Bervie, c. 1232-37 (LAC., p. 21). "Cachepol" refers to Utting's office, catchpoll," i.e. bailiff. Vtting the smith of Stirling was a charter witness, c. 1275 (Inchaffray, p. 97). William, son of Utting, possessed a tenement in Drumelzier, c. 1300-20 (Hay, p. 7), and Robert Vtting appears as witness in a court held at the standing stones of Rayne in the Garioch in 1349 (REA., I, p. 80). Andrew Vtyn was tenant in Grange of Kerse, 1466 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 154). The last record of the name appear to be in 1647, in which year a protection from writ of execution for debts of William Vtting, skipper, burgess of Anstruther, was granted to his widow and children in consequence of his ship having been taken by one of the king's frigates, and of his having been killed at Kilsyth (APS., VI, pt. I, p. 819).
A baptismal name. Utting de Cresswell was witness to a deed temp. King John. Gent. Mag. Oct. 1832. Uttyng appears as a surname in H.R.
Utting is another ancient Norfolk name. A Norwich alderman who bore this name was in 1643 a prominent member of the cabal which led to the city declaring for the Parliament against the King; however, when Mr. Utting filled the office of mayor in 1647 he seems to have changed his opinions, since he was imprisoned by his old friends the Roundheads; he was buried in Brandon church in 1658 (Bl.). The name is still in Norwich. Shottesham church contains the mortal remains of John Utting, who died in 1688, and also of his family; Henry Utting, gent., was buried in Belaugh church in 1715 (Bl.). In the 13th century the name of Uttyng occurred in Hunts (H. R.). It is said to have been a personal name in early English times.
