This surname is derived from a farm called Ovenstone in the parish of Carnbee, Fife, Scotland. It was described in the Ordnance Survey name books of 1853-55 as:.

About 1 3/8 miles West South West of the farm house of Pratis. A small plantation consisting chiefly of Fir trees, in the estate of Kilmux. There was formerly some cottages at this place called Ovenstone, hence the name.

It is found in 17th and 18th century records as Unstone or Unston, which are clearer links to it's etymology - being derived from the personal name, Ewan, and the Old English,-tun, meaning 'town' or 'enclosure'. Ewan is an Anglicisiation of the Scottish Gaelic name, Eòghann, which is thought to mean 'born of the mountains'.

The Ovenstone family, who likely hailed from property in Ovenstone and were engaged in fishing on the Fife coast. From the early 19th century they began spreading out as merchant seamen and ship commanders, trading in The Americas, Africa, The Orient and Australia.
