The Owyen surname came during immigration from Norway to the United States of America. The original name of the family's ancestors was Oyen. Oyen and Owyen means 'farmer'. During immigration to the United States there were many people immigrating from Germany with the surname Owen. This name Owen was conflated with Oyen during the the writing of the immigration forms and so when it was corrected with the statement 'Yes, but with a y in the middle'. It was written as Owyen by mistake. This was left as it is today and the name Owyen began as a surname in the United States. It is pronounced as one would say 'Owen' but the Owyen family is in fact of Norwegian ancestry.
