User-submitted Reference

The village of Oxenham existed as a cattle market about 13 miles west of the city of Exeter, capital of the county of Devonshire in West England. The site lies just off Route A30 between Exeter and Okehampton. It was registered in the Domesday book of King William 1, the Conqueror, around 1080 A.D. All that remains is Oxenham Manor, still a thriving farm, Oxenham Cross[roads], the Oxenham Arms and the Oxenham window in the parish church of St Andrew, South Tawton. The Oxenham Arms, now an hotel, was once a monastery built around a dolmen of the ancient Druids; was confiscated by King Henry the 8th, when he abolished the monasteries around 1533, and given to the Burgoyne family; who in turn made it part of the dowry of one of their daughters, who married into the Oxenham family early in the 17th century.

The John Oxenham mentioned below by Henry Brougham Guppy claimed to be the first Englishman to set eyes and sail on the Pacific Ocean, when he accompanied Sir Francis Drake on his second voyage to the Americas.
