PADYN: Gaelic Paidin, a pet or diminutive form of Padruig, 'little Pat' or 'Paddy.' Padinus (-us is Latin ending) filius Kerkau, 'aput corrukes,' was one of the witnesses to the Diuise de Stobbo, c. 1190 (REG., p. 89). Padinus, prepositus, witnessed an undated charter of three acres of Karruderes by Walter del Bois (Raine, 166). Patin Mac Gillenef is in record in the reign of William the Lion (LSC., p. 214), and Padyn, a chaplain, who witnessed a charter of confirmation by the Chapter of Dunblane, c. 1235, is doubtless Padin, presbyter of Mothel (Muthill) who appears in 1239 (LAC., 53, 54). Symone filius Padine was pledge for Ingram filius Dungalli in Dumfriesshire in 1376 (RHM., I, p. liii; II, p. 16). Cristofer Paidzeing was repledged to liberty of burgh of Irvine, 1472 (Irvine, I, p. 28), and Andrew Pudzane signed the Rand of Dumfries, 1570 (RPC., XIV, p. 66). William Padyne, carter, and John Padyne, skinner, were burgesses of Glasgow, 1599 (Burgesses). Roger Paidzeane was retoured heir of Thomas Paidzeane of Newtoun in the lands of Huik, Annandale, in 1605 (Retours, Dumfries, 30). James Padzean was a writer in Edinburgh, 1666 (Edinb. Marr.), and another James Padzean appears in Closeburn parish in 1671 (Just. Rec., II, p. 59). A family of this name in Ayrshire appears frequently in Corsehill Court Book around 1670 as Padzan, Padzean, Pudzein, Puidzan, Puidzane, Puidzean, Puidzeane, Putzan, Putzane, and Puydzean. Alexander Padgen, Janet Padzen. and Andrew Pudgeon appear in the Edinburgh Marriage Records. As forename: Paydene Wilycht and Paedan Oles in Inverness, 1572 (Rec. Inv., I, p. 85, 89).
