Paddock Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'at the parrock,' i.e. park. 'Parrocke, a lytell parke, parquet' (Palsgrave). The modern form paddock is a corruption (v. Skeat, paddock 2); Halliwell, parrick; Promptorium Parvulorum parrok. Anglo-Saxon pearroc, a small enclosure. The surname Parrick is a modern variant of Parrock. Martyn Freeth, late of Shrewsbury, suggested that this name could also have a Welsh origin, due to its prevalence on the Shropshire-Montgomeryshire border. The theory being that 'Jevan ap Madog', could become 'Jevan Padog' and later 'Jevan Parrock'.

1791. Married — William Worster and Elizabeth Parrock: St. George, Hanover Square.

1805. Samuel Croft and Hannah Farrick: ibid.

Evidence for the Welsh origin of the name can be found in this marriage:

1. Paddoc, without prefix, is the H.R. form. It seems to be a personal name, and to have originated, in Anglo-Saxon times, several names of places, such as Paddockswood, Padoxhurst, &c. 2. A small park or enclosure.

User-submitted Reference

The surname Parrock, Piddock, Paddock and variants, which are found sprinkled on the Welsh border area near Oswestry, has been suggested as a possible Welsh surname. Early Welsh naming custom denoted men by reference to their father (known as a patronym), e.g. Evan ap Madoc refers to Evan, son of Madoc. Evan may then go on to have a son named Griffith who would be know as Griffith ap Evan. As Welsh communities were Anglicised these patronyms were converted to fixed surnames in which, typically, the father's surname would be taken as a surname, e.g. Evan ap Madoc would become Evan Madoc. In some cases the particle, ap (which means 'son'), influenced the surname. We find references such as Upjohn from "ap John" and Pritchard from "ap Richard". It is possible that such a combining happened with the surname Paddock, transforming "ap Madoc" to Padoc or Paddock. However no evidence of such an origin has been located.

It is more likely that the surname comes from the Middle English, parrock, which refers to a 'pasture' or 'paddock', a 'feeding stall' or 'hut'. The word comes from the Old English, pearroc, meaning 'enclosure' or 'fence'. That it has originated from a field is strongly illustrated by the occurrence of Robertus del Parrok in the poll tax for Sentford, Shropshire (1381). Del Parrok means 'of the paddock'; a more suitable description than de Parrok, meaning 'of paddock'. Though in the same poll tax, a short distance from Robertus del Parrok is found Rogerus de Parrok. In the patent rolls of Henry III we find the de la particle (also meaning 'of the') in the person of Robert de la Parrok (1255).

A parrock could have been used for a number of purposes. The Middle English dictionary notes late medieval references to their use to keep chickens and boars. Another source references their use to keep geese.

Those who bear this surname are paternal descendants of a man who lived at or possessed a parrock. As a field of such a description is quite common it is likely that the specific field name was named Parrock or he lived in an area where such a field was a distinguishing feature.
