(English) Dweller by a Path [Old English pœð, a path + man] 2 = Pedman, q.v.
A pad is, in several dialects, an ambling horse. A padman was therefore a man who had the care of such horses, and the name is analogous to Palfriman, Coltman, Horsman, Brockman, &c.
Padman: all mean the same as Packman, of whom Autolycus is the type. Packman has been corrupted into Paxman. The packman was, however, a superior pedlar, as he had a horse, or even more than one, that carried his packs.
