From the office of 'page originally a subordinate personal attendant of a knight. John Page was one of the Scots prisoners taken in Dunbar Castle in 1296 and confined in Tunbridge Castle (Bain, II, 742,939). Johannes Page had a charter of a davoch of land in Strathbolgy from Robert I (RMS., I, App. II, 25), and Adam Page, serviens regis, is mentioned in 1363 (RMS., I, 162). Join Page was tenant of part of Siokis in 1469 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 154), James Payge was juror on an inquest at Cupar in 1522 (SCBF., p. 266), Thomas Paige was witness in Fife in 1542 (Laing, 464), and John Paig is recorded in Paisley in 1749 (Kilbarchan).
V. Page.
(English) A male servant of the lowest grade, an attendant.
Properly a young male servant-a subordinate personal attendant of great men. It is curious that the Gr. Παις, the Latin puer, the French garcon, and the English boy, signify equally 'boy' or 'servant;' and page, from whatever source derived, has the same double meaning. According to Cotgrave, a page is "a waiting or serving boy (in France, where he hath often good breeding, he ought to be a gentleman borne); thence also a tayler's boy, a ship boy."
Child, and Varlet, were names given to youths between seven and fourteen years of age while receiving their education for knighthood.
1. A boy attending on a great person, rather for show, and as an indication of high rank, than for the performance of menial duties French ) 2. The common and almost only name of a shepherd's servant, whether boy or man; extensively used in Suffolk (See Halliwell). 3. A corruption from Peg, the nickname for Margaret. Page is also an old English word for a village.
Page. —Characteristic of the southern half of England, Notts and Shropshire representing its northernmost limits. It is most numerous in the eastern part of its area, especially in the counties of Essex and Sussex, and afterwards in Norfolk and Suffolk. Oxfordshire is also conspicuous for the frequency of the name. In the south - western counties, excluding Devon, it is rare.
