It derives from the medieval term palmerius, attributed to those who had made the pilgrimage to the Holy Land and returned carrying a palm twig with them. Traces of this cognomizzazzione are found in the Chronic of the things occurring in its time (1294) by Dino Compagni: '... there were the conspirators against Giano, who were the messer Palmieri of Messer Ugo Altoviti, Messer Baldo Aguglioni judge , Alberto di messer Iacopo del Giudice, Noffo by Guido Bonafedi, and Arriguccio di Lapo Arrighi ... '; in 1406 with Matteo Palmieri cited among the supporters of the Medici; in 1432 in the Archive of the Opera of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, where in one act we read: '... Stanziaro a Matteo di Marcho Palmieri lire 191 soldi 16 ...'. Famous figures were the painter Giuseppe Palmieri (1674-1749) of Genoa and the Marquis Giuseppe Palmieri of Martignano (Le) famous economist of the 1700s.
