This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the palliser,' or with feminine suffix 'the pallister,' a surname seemingly peculiar to Yorkshire, where it still flourishes. The Surtees Society records contain early references (unfortunately I have mislaid my notes) to such persons as 'Robert Redman, palayser.'
'Paid to James Foster, palycer, as a present for making the payle (i.e. fence) near the dwelling of the Lord Prior, near the butgarth.': Liber Bursarii. Eccles. Dunelmensrs, Surt. Soc.
The palliser (the Frenchpalis, a pale, a stake) was a kind of parker, one who guarded or fenced enclosures. As regards pallister, it may be as well to say that the Poll Tax (1379) proves that the feminine suffix -ster was very popular in all occupative names (v. Slaster for Slater); compare palisade.
