Pancholi Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

Geographically, one would find people with the surname of Pancholi in Western India, more specifically in Gujarat and regions of Maharashtra. Pancholis belong to an ethnic group called Ahirs who are spread over Northern India. The Ahirs themselves are considered by some historians as descendants of the Abhira people, dating to the era of Ramayan and Mahabharat.

The Abhiras were considered 'mleccha' by Aryans, as is mentioned by Patanjali in one of his texts. This was due to their dishonest ways and tendency to indulge in robbery and harass travelers. The Abhiras are thought to have descended from herders and farmers.

Some scholars state that the Abhira people belonged to the region of Herat in Afghanistan. This might go some way in explaining the lighter than usual skin and fair eyes that Pancholi people are often seen to possess.

The Abhiras ruled over regions in the Deccan Plateau from 203-270 AD. By 350 AD, they were noted as living in Rajputana. Many were also living in nort-west India at the time, regions which are now Afghanistan and Pakistan. It can thus be considered that the Pancholis living in Western India are their descendants.

The present day Pancholi community is agrarian in nature and is widely Gujarati-speaking.

The most well-known person with the surname Pancholi is Aditya Pancholi, Indian film actor.
