Our ancestors record probably goes back to around 1265-1267 in Kalinga Raja (modern name Odisha).
Jajata Kehai (1200 AD) brought around 1100 Brahmin families from Kanuyakubja (modern Kannauj, UP) because there was a shortage of Kulin Brahmins in Kalinga at that time, and settled in various places in Kalinga. One group had settled at Jajpur branch of which moved to village Kuligaon in the Balasore district. This was at the time of Raja 'Manmoth Dev' who helped this group of Brahmins to move from Jajpur to settle in Kuligaon. King Jajati used to give one gold coin (?) daily to each head of family. Later, he gave land to each family or group of families (Brahman Basti/Sasave), number of acres dependent on number of people living in that Sasane and fertility of the land in that area.
Brahmins were mostly classified in 2 types, according to what they did. Those who looked after cultivation of the land were called Pradhani Brahmins. They were also given charge of village administration, law, collection etc. The village head was called Pradhan. The other type who mostly did pujas in temples, marriages, sacred thread ceremony's, (?) etc were called Jajmani Brahmins. They mostly managed from gifts from clients and from gifts from temples etc. They usually had meals (Prasad) at Temples, gifted by 'Bhaktas' They were not very well-to–do materially.
From the recorded information available, Ramchandra was the last name available to us. He was settled in village 'Kuligaon' in Balasore Zilla (District). This around 1279AD. His son Bijiram was also living in that village. He was again a Pradhani Brahmin. He himself did not do cultivation but duties supervision other low class people (mostly sadis's) did cultivation for him. He was also the village head (Pradhan) His duty was to work as a mediator or judge in differences of opinions or family or personal disputes, general looking after village affairs along with other senior Brahmin members (Panchayat) also local collection of tax which is given to agents of British India Company and later the Queens administrators.
Probably around ( ), our family moved to village Maharajpu, not very far from Kuligaon, about 5-6 km west., surrounded by agricultural land, small rivers, springs and thousands of palm trees (Tala, Khajai).
Again, Balavadra, his son, Bhagirathi his son Brajemohan continued to live in Maharajpur village. They continued to do the same thing as their parents and grandparents. They probably had about 5- 7 acres of pradhere land. They mostly did agriculture, local politics and worked as local tax collectors for the village.
All Brahmins could be classified under four groups. According to the vedas their orgininal forefathers followed, they could be one of the four groups.
- Rig 2) Yajur 3) Sam 4) Artharva
Each Vedic group is again subdivided into several 'Gotras' we belong to Krisnatreya Gotra. Each Gotra is again subdivided into various 'sakhas' We belong to kanyakubja sakha. Each Sakha is again subdivided into many 'Gosti's'. We belong to 'Ghyutakatlola prebara gosti'
So we are Brahmins of Yajurveda, of Krisnatreya Gotra of Kanyakubja sakha of Ghrutakallola Prabara Gosti,
Ramchandra – not much is known about personal details of Ramchandra
Bijiram- Lived in village 'kuligaon'. Wife unknown, Had 3 sons – 1) Uchaba 2) Kanhu 3) Balavadra. We are discendents of Bhagirathi.
