From the island of the same name in Orkney. Sigurd of Pappley was juror on an inquest held at Kirkwall in 1369, and Peter of Paplay was a citizen of Kirkwaw in 1422 (REO., p. 16, 34). The Paplays "were one of the greatest native families in Orkney till their chief estates passed by marriage to the Irvings, about 1460 and even after that they remained among the leading families in the islands for a considerable period" (PSAS., LII, p. 183). There are many references to individuals of the name in Orkney in the Records of the earldom of Orkney. John Papplay was one of those respited for the slaughter of the earl of Caithness in 1529 (RSS., II, 3151), and David Paiplay retoured heir of Patrick Paiplay in Leithe in 1621 (Inquis., 959).
