Pardo Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

One who had gray hair; descendant of Pardo, a pet form of Leopardo (lion, hard).

Of Greek origin and used extensively throughout Spain. Found principally in Valencia, Aragon, Andalusia, Castile, and Galicia. Name of several villages near Almiera, Sigüenza, and Tarragona. Derived from German "bardult" - a wolf, but can mean wolf color, such as grey, brown, or cloudy. As patronymic often found in combination with other names and toponyms.

Related to the word "pardilla" that came from the latin "pardus" which in Greek meant leopard and probably sparrow since both are dark. With time "pardo" expressed the difference between the leopard and the lion and the word became a synonym for dark.

Galician name found throughout the Peninsula.
