Parness (פרנס) was an honorary title given to the president of a large Jewish community. In particular, in 1699, Avraham son of Zvi, of Dubno in the then Polish Empire, was chosen as Parness of Polish Jewry. The next three generations of his family included a Parness of the Polish Jewish community. Many of their male offspring took Parness as their family name, out of respect for their forbear's high honour.
The fourth Parness/President in the dynasty was given the Polish equivalent title of Marszał by the Polish Government, and many of his progeny took the name Marshalkovich (son of the Marshall).
