John Paris was witness in Glasgow, 1513 (Ros, 35), and Elspet Paris in West Lothian was guilty of witchcraft, 1624 (RPC., XIII, p. 422). William Peiris, burgess of Haddington, 1611 (Inpuis., 8467), and James Peires, burgess of Linlithgow, 1676 (ibid., 5924), Margaret Parise was married in Edinburgh, 1637 (Edinb. Marr.), and Thomas Pareis was heir of James Stevinstone in Old Listoun, 1686 (Inquis., 6702). The frequency of 'de Paris,' or 'de Pairs and 'de Parisiis' as English surnames in the thirteenth century, especially in Lincolnshire (Madden, pref. to Matthew Paris, Hist., III) has led Sir J. H. Ramsay (Foundations of England, I, p. 61) to the ingenious inference that the name of the Parisii, who lived near the mouth of the Humber, persisted as that of a district in N.
