Partridge Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname was almost certainly given to someone who resembled Partridge (a bird from the pheasant family). It has been suggested that the surname may be derived from a partridge hunter, but given this name's popularity in both medieval and contemporary times, it is unlikely the surname would arise from such a specific and lowly origin. In medieval times the partridge was seen as cunning and deceitful, which I feel is the likely origin of the name. In English heraldry the partridge signifies cunning or guile. The bird was also repute to steal the eggs of other birds, engage in homosexual acts and be of a lusty nature. Partridge can be found in a large number of variations, some of which have probably become Patrick and vice versa.
