Partridge Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname was almost certainly given to someone who resembled Partridge (a bird from the pheasant family). It has been suggested that the surname may be derived from a partridge hunter, but given this name's popularity in both medieval and contemporary times, it is unlikely the surname would arise from such a specific and lowly origin. In medieval times the partridge was seen as cunning and deceitful, which I feel is the likely origin of the name. In English heraldry the partridge signifies cunning or guile. The bird was also repute to steal the eggs of other birds, engage in homosexual acts and be of a lusty nature. Partridge can be found in a large number of variations, some of which have probably become Patrick and vice versa.
This surname is derived from a nickname. 'the partridge.' Middle English partriche, pertriche. compare Nightingale, Wildgoose, Sparrow, &c. Also compare Aldridge for Aldrich.
Walter Purtrich, Cambridgeshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.
Gilbert Partrich, Oxfordshire, ibid.
Ancelm Partrich, c. 1300. Writs of Parliament.

Thomas le Partrich, Somerset, 1 Edward III: ibid. p. Ql.
Robertus Pertryk, 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.
1719. Married — Wharton Partridge and Joanna Roberts: St. Michael, Cornhill.
(Anglo-French-Latin-Greek) a nickname from the bird [Middle English partrich(e, pertrich(e, Old French pertris (mod. French perdrix), Latin perdix, Greek πέρδιξ, a partridge] (Teutonic) a palatal form of Partrick, q.v.
Corruption of Patrick.
(English) Dweller at the sign of the partridge; one with some characteristic of a partridge.
Possibly from the bird; but more likely from some locality terminating in-RIDGE. Partriche is, however, a H.R. surname.
From Pettridge; a location name in Kent.
Partridge: is not, as a surname, from a bird, but is a corruption of Patrick. The transitive form of the name is Partrick.
