From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From either of the two places named Pittilloch, (1) near Freuchie, Fife, or (2) in Glenfarg, Perthshire. Ade de Petillok who is mentioned in a memo of 1295 (Cambus., 7) is probably the Adam de Pethilloch who appears as an assizer at Perth in 1305 (Bain, II, 1689). William de Pettillok had a charter of the lands of Gibblotistoun (now Gibliston) in Fife from Robert I (RMS., I, App. II, 900,354). John de Pyttyllok held a toft in Portyn-:rag in 1433 (RAA., II, 68). Robert Pittilloeh, a Dundee man of humble rank raised recruits for the French service in the neighborhood of Dundee in 1423—1424. He accompanied them to France., entered the French service becoming commander of the "Hommes d'armes a la grant paye." in 1452 he obtained letters of naturalization, was made lord of Sauvetene, and was known as "le petit roi de Gascoyne." As Robert Pettillo de Clermont he was one of the ambassadors accredited by James II to the kings of France and Castile, and in records relating to the Scots Guards in France he appears as Robin Petit Lo. He died in 1460 (Forbes Leith, I, p. 63). Robert Pettillo, burgess of Perth in 1567 (RPC., I, p. 505) may be the Robert Pettullock who held a feu of the cornemyln of Kynnochtry in 1585 (Scon, p. 224). William Pettillok, reidare at Essie, 1574 (RMR.). Alexander Pattillo was a member of the Huntly Volunteers in 1798 (Will, p. 7), and Robert Pittilloeh was author of Tracts legal and historical, 1827. Hugh Macdonald errs in saying that MacLullichs, descended from Angus, son of Reginald, son of Somerled, are in the Low Country called Pitullichs (HP., I, p. 13). Pathillok c. 1590, Patillok 1521, Pattillock 1572, Pattullok 1552, Patullow 1557, Pettillow 1524 Petulloch 1558, Petullow 1559, Pitiloch 1681, Pittillocke 1651, Pittilluo 1664, Pittulloch 1G00 Pitilloche 1615, Pittillock 1643.
