PATONSON: 'son of Paton,' which see. A common surname in the fifteenth century. Nichole Patenesone was a Scots prisoner of war in Bamborgh Castle, 1305 (Bain, 11. p. 449) Richard Patonson held the land of Newbigging in 1413 and a tenement in the vill of Edinburgh the same year (Neubotle, p. 237,238). John Patovnson is in record in Aberdeen in 1444 (CRA., p. 399), and Alexander Patonson was made burgess there in 1447 (NSCM., I, p. 11). Donald Patonson served on inquest to determine the rights of pasturage which the Temple lands had over the adjoining town and territory of Letter in 1461 (Strathendrick, p. 222), and Adam Petensen of Scotland had a safe conduct to travel in England in 1464 (Bain, IV, 1343). John Patonson, witness to an inquisition on a fishing in the Tweed in 1467 was probably a son of Patone of Hangaldesyde, one of the jurors on the inquest (RD., p. 359). Matthew Patonsoun witnessed a charter of the Collegiate Church of Methven in 1468 (Methven, p. 24), and Alexander Patynson or Patonson, Scottish shipmaster, had safe conducts into England, 1475-76 (Bain, IV, 1433, 1442, 1476). John Patonsoun and David Patonsoun were two "occupatorum carbofodinarum de Gilmertoun" in 1506 (Soltre, p. 78). John Pattounsoun was convicted of fishing during prohibited time in Water of Annand, 1504 (Trials, I, p. 40), Schie Lancelote Patonsoun, 'chapellain,' died of the 'giantgor,' 1509 (ibid., I, p. 110), and Cherles Patonsoun was charged with murder, 1512 (ibid., I, p. 81). John Pawtonsoun was made free burgess of Dumfries in 1530 (Mill, Plays, p. 171), and Thomas Pattowsone was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1540 (NSCM., I, P-56).
