Pauncefote Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

(Anglo-French-Latin) occur in our 13th-cent. records as Pancefot, Pancevot, the Domesday Pancevolt = Arched Paunch (evid. a nickname for a corpulent person) [Old French pance (mod. panse), Latin pantex, -icis, the belly + Old French volt(e, vaulted, arched (cp. mod. French voûte, a vault), Latin volut-us, pp. of volvere, to roll] The mediæval Latinization of this name as de Pede Planco (Broad-Foot) was possibly due to motives of delicacy.

Pancevolt is one of the old Norman names which Camden in his ‘Remaines’ prefaced by: “for who knoweth now what these names were?”

Surnames of the United Kingdom (1912) by Henry Harrison

PANCEFOT: This name is spelt in such varying forms, that its true orthography and its right meaning appear to be unattainable. It is written Pauncefote, Pancevolt, Pancefort, Poncefortt, Pancevot, and Pancefot. In charters it is latinized De Pede Planco, that is, "of the Splay-Foot," but for this rendering there appears to be no authority. The first of the name on record is Bernard Pancevolt, a Domesday tenant-in-chief in Hampshire. Geoffrey de Pauncevote was steward to the household of King John.
