The family name Pavlyukevich refers to a common type of Slavic surname, formed from baptismal names.

After 988, every Slav during the official ceremony of baptism received from the priest a baptismal name. Such naming allowed solving the problem of identification: the allocation of a particular person from society. That is why church names became the active base for the creation of surnames. Religion demanded that a child be called in honor of a legendary or historical person, revered by the church on a strictly certain day of the year.

The surname is studied in the name of Paul, which means 'small' in Latin. This family name could be obtained by an ancestor, whose patron family considered St. Paul the Apostle. In Russia he was especially popular among the Christian population. It is known that Paul witnessed the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This led him to apostolic activity, during which years numerous Christian communities were established by Paul in the territory of Asia Minor and the Balkan Peninsula. His messages to communities and individuals constitute a significant part of the New Testament and are one of the main texts of Christian theology.

The ancestor could get his name, which later became generic, born on one of the days of the memory of this saint.

It was believed that when the name was formed from the baptismal name, the patron saint's intercession extended to the whole clan.

In the XIV century, the Slavs from Western Europe came to the tradition of creating surnames as special, inherited generic names. Already in the 16th century absolutely different models of the formation of Ukrainian-Belarusian and Russian surnames were formed. So, if in Russia the overwhelming majority of surnames were formed by adding suffixes -и / -и and -ин to the name or nickname of the father, then for Ukrainian and Belarusian surnames it was typical to create family names with suffixes -enko, -ovich / -event, -ук / -yuk, -char / -chuk. Initially these suffixes had the following meanings: 'small', 'young man', 'son'. Therefore Pavlyuk was literally understood as 'the son of a man named Paul'. The son of Pavlyuk received an additional suffix of the patronymic -evich. Later, the ancient suffix lost its direct meaning and was preserved only as a family one. Thus the inherited surname Pavlyukevich.

Certainly, the surname Pavlyukevich represents a remarkable monument of Slavic writing and culture. However, the process of formation of surnames was quite long, and therefore it is only possible to speak definitively about the exact place and time of occurrence of the genus Pavelyukevich on the basis of deep and serious genealogical research.
