A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

From the lands of Paxton in Berwickshire, the tun or town of Pac (Old English Paecc). The lands were long owned by the family of Paxton. David de Pakestun was witness to a quitclaim of the land of Swinton by Patrick, first earl of Dunbar (Raine, App., p. 27). Walter and Andrew de Paxtun were witnesses to the deed of sale by Adam of Little Reston of Adam, son of Thurkill, a serf, to the prior of Coldingham, c. 1240. Robert de Paxton, prior of St. John of Jerusalem, rendered homage in 1296. Nicol de Paxtone and Robert de Paxton both of the county of Berewyke also rendered homage in 1296, and the latter, in 1304, had the English lands of his grandfather, William de Paxton, restored to him (Bain, II, p. 206,214, 416). Sir John de Paxiston was juror on an inquisition at Berwick on the lands of Lady Elena la Zuche (ibid., p. 215). Patrick de Paxtoun was tenant of Mordyngtoun in 1376 (RHM., I, p. lxiii), and James de Paxtoun was a juror on a claim to the third part of Cranshaws in 1453 (Swinton, p. xxxix). Patrick de Paxtoun witnessed a charter of lands in Fife in 1395 (Wemyss, II, p. 33). The name is found in Edinburgh in 1400 (Egidii, p. 37) and in Aberdeen in the following year (CRA., p. 379).
