The surname Peñafiel is believed to have Spanish origins. It originated from the name of a castle in a town called Peñafiel in Valladolid, Spain, known as Castillo de Peñafiel. The name is derived from the Latin Pinna fidelis which means 'loyal rock or mountain.'

Additionally, Spanish legends say that when Count Sancho Garcia finally took over this castle, he planted his lance atop the hill and screamed, Ésta será la Peña Fiel de Castilla! which translates to 'This will be Castile's faithful rock!' and thus the castle got its current name.

Aside from Spain, Portugal also has a town called Penafiel. It was also named after the Penafiel castle or also known as the palace of the counts of Penafiel. The name was believed to be a shortened form of the Latin Pinna fidelis.
