This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. —the son of Pece,' a great Yorkshire surname. No doubt Pece was one of the many variants of Pace, i.e. Easter, so given because born or baptized on that day; v. Pask, Pace, Pass, Pacey, &c. In Lancashire Easter-egging is still Paceegging or Peace-egging.

Anders Pass, "aff wapu," i.e. armiger, appended his seal to a deed at Copenhagen in June 1433 (Diplomatarium Norvegicum, III, 720). James Pase witnessed a disposition of a land in Wasbister in the parish of Holm in 1483 (REO., p. 195), Magnus Paise owned a tenement in Kirkwall in 1573, and Angus Peace was a witness there in 1553 (ibid., p. 248,350). William Peace published his Descriptive and historic handbook to the Orkney Islands in 1862.
