PECHE: An ancient baronial family, called in charters, De Peccato. They appear as early as the reign of King Stephen, and they were doubtless of Norman extraction. They were of prime importance in Kent, temp. Edw. I.
Might mean ‘‘fished up,” but doesn’t, so cannot be used as the foundation of a claim to a descent from Jonah or Moses in the bulrushes. Its earliest form is “Peccatum,” “the sin”—a rare case of a name arising from an abstract noun
