The name is unique to the United States and evolved after the immigration to America of Anna Maria Schmidt Beckinbach (b. 1693 in Wunschmichelbach, Hessen, Germany, d. 1778 in Fredricktown, Maryland) and her children Caspar, George Adam, and Georg Leonhardt Beckinbach. They arrived on the ship Janet in Philadelphia on 7 October 1751. Anna Maria Beckinbach was the widow of Johann Adam Beckenbach, b. 1717 in Eiterbach, Germany, d. 3 July 1747 in Heddesbach, Rhein-Neckar-Kreis, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. All Peckinpaughs and those with one of the variant spellings, are descended from Johann Adam Beckenbach and Anna Maria Schmidt. The history of this family is documented in the book 'Descendants of Johann Adam and Anna Maria Beckenbach' which was compiled by Edwin T. and Atha Peckenpaugh Brace.

Johann Adam Beckenbach was born in 1691 in Eiterbach, Rhein-Neckar-Kreis, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany. He married Anna Maria Schmitt. After his death in 1747, his widow and most of their 12 children emigrated to America. Over the course of the next few decades the family anglicised their surname to Peckinpaugh.
