This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Peter,' from O.K. Pierre, Old English Piers or Pierce. Although Peter, and with it Piers, lost much of its popularity after the Reformation, we cannot fail to see from our directories (Pearson, &c.) how extremely familiar the name was in all parts of England at the time surnames were becoming hereditary.
