PENANGO: An old surname in Ayrshire, derived from the barony of Pennango in the parish of Cavers, Roxburghshire. Believed now to be extinct. William de Penango had a dispensation in 1332 to be ordained and to hold a benefice (Pap. Lett, II, p. 357), and in 1536 there is record of 'ane singular fechting betuix' some Johnstone, Moffats, and Gyrie Panago, 'quha was slane' (Diur. Occ., p. 20). James Pennango had a gift of all the goods of James Symontoun in Lekclyok, 1532 (RSS., II, 1414), and Symon Panango had a gift of the nonentres of part of the land of Auchincors and Corsyncon in Ayrshire, 1535—6 (ibid., 1974). Symiune Pannango, 'capitane of Coldinghame,' is mentioned under the year 1543 (Diur. Occ., p. 30), William Penan£o in Easter Quhytfield witnessed a precept by the commendator of Coldingham in 1557 (Home, p. 206), and Hew Pennandgow was one of the followers of the earl of Cassilis at the encounter with the laird of Bargany c. 1600.
