From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
PENCAITLAND: From the old barony of the name in East Lothian. In the reign of William the Lion we have confirmation of a grant by Euerard de Pencatlan or Pencatheland of the church of Pencatlan to the Abbey of Kelso (Kelso, 13,390), and c. 1180 a confirmation by Walter, son of Euerard de Pencathlan, of the same church (ibid., 369). About the year 1200 Henry de Pencatlet witnessed a charter by Peter de Graham in favor of the Abbey of Neubotle (Neubotle, 7), and about 1215 probably the same Henry de Pencatle witnessed a rharter concerning the water-course of the mill of Bereford near Morham (ibid., p. 66). Johannes de Pencathlan witnessed the gift by Philip de Mubray to the monks of Dunfermline, c. 1202-14 (RD., p. 95), and also witnessed the grant of the lands of Swaynystoun (now Swanston) to the Hospital of Soltre between 1221-24 (Soltre, p. 23). John de Penkatlon was charter witness, c. 1250 (RPSA., p. 388-389). David de Penkatlonde or Pencatland, burgess of Haddington, swore fealty at Berwick on Tweed, 1296, and in the same year was juror on an inquest held at Berwick (Bain, II, p. 197,215). John de Pencatlan was constable of Jeddeworthe Castle when it was surrendered to Edward I in 1299 (ibid., II, 1086), and in the reign of Robert I Thomas de Penkatelande or Pentkatelande was forfeited for adherence to the English cause (RMS., I, 55, 68).
