From the office of 'pender' or 'pinder,' impounder of strayed cattle, as defined in the Promptorium Parvulorum: "Pyndare of beestys, pynnar, inclusor." An old surname in the parish of Mugdock and in Lanarkshire. William Pender, wobster, burgess-freeman, Glasgow, 1600 (Burgesses). David Pender in Carstairs, Lanarkshire, 1644, and eleven more of the name are recorded in the Commissariot Record of Lanark. Robert Pendar of Burne, 1672 (Inquis. Tut., 977), James Pender in Slamannan, 1691 (Torphichen), and John Pender in Rindmuir, Lanark, 1711 (Minutes, p. 115). Pender and Pinder in many instances in Ireland are said to be shortened forms of Prendergast (Woulfe, p. 659). See Penner.

Pender is an old Cornish name. Pendre is an estate in St. Buryan, where the family of Pender or Pendre resided until the reign of Henry VI. (G.) The Pendars were seated at Trevidar, in the same parish, for upwards of five centuries, and were traditionally of the same stock as the Penders or Pendres (G.). Benjamin and Francis Pender were on the Commission of the Peace for the county in 1803 (P.). One of the present homes of the names is in the Scilly Islands.
