From the place of the same name in Pembrokeshire, Wales. The family gave the name of their Welsh home to their new possessions, Prenderguest (now a farm, a 1152 Prenderghest) near Ayton, Berwickshire. Waldoev de Prendergest witnessed the grant of the churcli of Kilmaurs to the Abbey of Kelso, c. 1170 (Kelso, 283). Helia de Prendregest witnessed a charter by Adam de Lamberton of the third part of Lambertun, c. 1190-1200 (BNCH., XVI, p. 332). Elya de Prendregest and Henry de Prendregest witnessed C irters by Patrick, first earl of Dunbar (Raine, 116,117). Adam de Prendergest witnessed the deed of sale of Adam, son of Thurkill, to the prior of Coldingham, c. 1240. Peter de Prendyrgest was juror on inquisition on the lands of Elena la Zuche in the sheriffdom of Berwick, 1296, and in the same year Henry de Prendregast of Berwickshire rendered homage (Bain, II, p. 206,215). Dominus Henricus de Prendergest appears in 1325 as dominus de eadem (BNCIL, xv1, p. 324), Nicholas de Prendergest was burgess of Glasgow, 1413 and 1424 (REG., 323; LCD., p. 242), and Robert de Prendergest was rector of Glasfurd, 1440 (REG., 344).
