From Penhale, the name of places in Davidstow, Duloe, Gwinear, Ladock, Lanivet, and the Luxulion, and of a manor in Perranzabuloe; from pen-hâl, head of the moor. Hals says, "In Domesday, Eyles-kerry (1087) was taxed under the name of Pen-hall-an, now Pen-heale, then and still the voke-lands of a considerable manor." Tonkin calls it Penhele or Penhale, which he renders the head of the river. Penhell and Penheale are doubtless the same name. compare Penhallow.
