Pennycuck Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

PENNECUIK, Pennycook, Pennycuik, Pennycuick: Of territorial origin from the barony of Penicuik in Midlothian. The first of the family in record is William de Penycook, one of the persons directed to fix the extent of the lands of Lethenhop in the reign of Alexander II, and soon after Sir David de Penicoke is mentioned (Neubotle, p. 90,304). David de Penikok witnessed a charter of the lands of Inuerpefir in 1250 (RAA., I, p. 190). Two persons of the name rendered homage in 1296: Margaret de Penicoke and Huwe de Penicoke, both of Edinburghshire. The seal of the latter beers a griffin passant to dexter. S' Hvgonis de Penekoi (Blair, II, p. 201,208, 534). David de Penycuke, dominus ejusdem, granted his lands of Bernistoun and Welchetoun to his cousin, William of Creichtoune, 1373 (Sc. Peer., III, p. 55). John de Penykuke, scutifer, is mentioned in 1418 (CMN., 28), Alexander de Penycuyk was master of arts and perpetual curate of the church of Kilconquher in Fife, 1463 (ibid., 29), and George de Pennicuk (Pennycuk, Penikuke, or Penycuk), bailie and burgess of Edinburgh, appears frequently in record between 1467 and 1473 (Neubotle, 299,300; REG., 398-401). As the ancient charters of the Pennycuicks have long since disappeered it is not possible to ascertain their origin or the exact date of their acquisition of the barony. The lands and barony passed from their possession by sale in 1604. Panecovk 1563, Pencook 1730, Pennycuke 1437, Penycuk 1423.
