The family first appear at Arkelby, co. Cumberland, but as there is, in the neighbourhood of that place, in the parish of Greystock, a hamlet so called, they are presumed to have originated there. The Encyc. Herald., however, assigns arms to a family of this name, in that land of Pens, Cornwall, and so there may be two local origins and distinct families. The surname has long been associated with Wiltshire and Hampshire.
