From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
PENTON: Penton, east of Annan, Dumfriesshire, is locally pronounced with the accent on the latter syllable, Penton. It was originally Pennyton or Penitone. In 1211 "four knights of the county of Lancaster sent to Penitune to see whether the infirmity wherefore Adam de Penitone essoins himself .. be sickness or not" (Bain, I, 505). In the following year Alan de Penigtun acted as witness to a signatere on a deed (ibid., 554). In 1295 a summons was issued by Alan ae Peniton, and in 1296 it is recorded that Geoffrey de Moubray of Scotland had"10 l. of land in the vill of Raskelf which he gave to Alan de Peningeton, knight, in exchange for land which the late king John gave Alan in Scotland" (ibid., II, p. 173).
