This Donegal name is an example of the more absurd type of pseudo-translation —-it arose from the similarity of the sound of the word daoine (people) and the duibhne of O'Duibhne, anglicized Deeney, see More Irish Families (p. 81). Both Peoples, also spelt Peebles, and Deeney are mainly found in the barony of Raphoe. In 1631 Hugh Peoples of Carnetellagh acquired the lands of Ballehebestocke, Co. Antrim and the name as Peoples, Peables, Pebbles, Pebles and Pheables appears frequently in the Co. Antrim hearth money rolls (1669).
