This surname arose in England, France, Germany and Holland. Peppercorn (in Latin piperis granum) was the nickname of Notker Physicus, a pysician and artist who lived at the Abbey of St. Gall, in what is now Switzerland. The nickname referenced his close attention his religion.

It has also been suggested that the surname may reference some with peppercorn-cloured hair or one who paid for land by the feudal custom of a pepercorn rent (see also Pluckrose.)
