Pepper Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Metonymic for 'pepperer,' a dealer in pepper or spices. There was also an Old English personal name seen in Pipernaess. William Peppir, pewderer, burgess freeman of Glasgow, 1608 (Burgesses).
(Anglo-Latin etc.) metonymic for Pepperer, i.e. a Dealer in Pepper [Old English pipor, Latin piper, pepper] (English) English place-names like Pepper- thorpe, Pepper-Hall, etc., show that this surname must have another origin—prob. (notwithstanding the long t) the Old English pípere, a piper: we find the Anglo-Saxon family-name Piperinges in an 8th-cent. charter. (‘Cart. Sax.’ No. 145).
(English) One who dealt in pepper and other condiments.
Said to be a corruption of the Norman Pipard. which family gave name to Rotherfield Pipard, Clyve Pipard, and other manors in the west of England. Peper, Pepyr. H.R.
For Peppard or Pipard. William, Gilbert, Robert, Walter, Ranulph Pipart, Normandy 1180-95 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae); Gilbert Pipard, England 1189 (Rot. Pip.). See Cary.
From the Dutch, Peper, Pieper; from the Flemish, Pepet, Piepers; from the Swedish, Piper; from the Danish, Pieper, Piper; in the Domesday Book, Pipe, Piperell; personal name Pepard in Roll of Battell Abbey.
The Peppers of Thurmaston were an old and gentle family of the 16th and 17th centuries (N.).
Pepper is an ancient name in the east of England. It is now at home in Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, and Suffolk; and six centuries ago it occurred as Pepir and Peper in Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Hunts, and Norfolk (H. R.). In the churchyard of St. John the Baptist, Stamford, there is the following singular inscription on the tomb of William Pepper, who died in 1783 at the age of 46 (A.): —
"Tho' hot my name, yet mild my nature,
I bore good - will to every creature;
I brewed fine ale, and sold it too,
And unto each I gave his due.".
I do not think that Richard Pepir (a namesake, if not an ancestor, of William Pepper), who resided in the wapentake of Ness in the county of Lincolnshire during the reign of Edward I. (H. R.), would have accepted this interpretation of his name. In truth, the Pipers of Essex might with almost equal reason claim to possess a hot name, since they possess it in its Latin form! Probably Pepper and Piper, in the east of England at least, have a common origin; but mere similarity in sound with modern words will not aid us in finding it: we must trace the different forms of the same name as it occurs in the old parish registers and in the historical records of a still earlier date.
The name of Pepper, which is further referred to under "Lincolnshire," has its present Suffolk home in the Wangford district.
