But the king lost in the battle and British took over Sri Lanka, so the soldiers settled in Vellore, India.

Originated in Anuradhapur, Sri Lanka. The perannagaris were soldiers who commanded the army of Sri Vikrama Rajasinha. The soldiers were sent to India to help the Tamil rulers to fight against British.
But the king lost in the battle and British took over Sri Lanka, so the soldiers settled in Vellore, India. The surname was again split into Vellore and Perannagari due to the inter community marriage between Indians and Sri Lankans.
The Perannagaris are native Sri Lanka whereas the Vellore are native Indians. The people later moved to Chittor when Andhra Pradesh was formed in 1963.
