Petranovich is from Senj, Croatia. If you have Petranovich ancestry, that part is strictly from Croatia. The Petranovich people from Senj were pirates and fishermen. Senj is directly on the coast. In the 17th century they fought with the Ottoman Empire. During this time the Uskoks lived in Senj and occupied the fortress. They served an important purpose during the wars since they had small units of men rowing swift boats that proved to be very effective forces. However, after the Uskok war with Venice, which ended in 1617, they were forbidden to settle in the area.

In the Senj records you wont find but one Petranovic. Since they were forbidden to stay in Senj they settleed in Delnice and other areas in Croatia.

The name Petranovic is in two parts. Part one, Petra, means 'Peter' or 'rock'. The second part, -ovich, means 'son of'. So the total name means 'son of Peter'. Many Croats took names of apostles and other biblical figures.
