Diminutive of (1) Peter, which see, and
(2) of Patrick, which see. Charles Patre in Balwelow is recorded in 1513 (SCM., IV, p. 14), Mr. Andrew Petre was vicar of Wick, Caithness, 1530 (OPS., II, p. 752; Trials, I, p. 149), and David Petiye was charter witness in Tannadyce, 1603 (RER., II, 233). Payment was made for entertainment in Hendrie Petrie's house in Aberdeen, 1612 (SCM., V, p. 92), and in 1619 he appears as Henry Patrie, burgess (CRA., p. 360). George Paitrie and James Patrie were admitted burgesses of Aberdeen, 1620 (NSCM., I, p. 125), and James Petrie, filius Roberti Petri, was retoured heir of his father, 1688 (Retours, Aberdeen, 471). There are several instances in record of Petrie as a forename: Patrick Young, dean of Dunkeld, is mentioned in 1452 as Master Patry Yhong dene of Dunkelden (Bain, IV, p. 407), Patry Rede, forspekar in Aberdeen, 1503 (CRA., p. 430), Patty Leslie in 1512, and Patry Walcar in 1517 (ibid., p. 142,444). Patrick Roy Macgregor, executea in 1667, was commonly known as Petrie Roy Macgregor (Gordon, Keith, p. 34, 35). The name is pronounced Paitrie in Aberdeen.
