From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is more common in Lanarkshire than elsewhere, and appears many times in the Glasgow Protocol books of the sixteenth century. Thomas Petykreu of the county of Lanark, who rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 212), appears to be first of the name in record, and there were small landowners of the name in that county long after. John Petty grew witnessed the promulgation of a papal bull at Linlithgow in 1461 (Soltre, p. 63). A booth was leased to John Pedecrw in 1488 for half a mark, and the same year, as John Pethecrew, he was made a burgess of Lanark (Lanark, p. 3, 4). Mention is made in 1497 of a tenement of John Pedigrew in Glasgow (REG., 476), and another John Pategrew, tenant in the barony of Glasgow appears in 1515 (Rental). Sir Mabut Pedegrew, parish clerk of Monkland, 1518 (Simon, 48). John Petticrove of Green, Lanark, 1718 (Minutes, p. 190).
