PETTINAIN: The lands of Pettinain in Renfrewshire gave name to three generations of the family of Houston of that Ilk, Hugh de Paduynan and his son Reinaldus or Reginaldus held lands in Rumanoch, c. 1160 (Neubotle, p. 93-94). Between 1165 and 1173 Hugh de Pad'inan witnessed a grant of lands to the Abbey of Paisley, and before 1177 as Hugh de Padinnan he witnessed a charter by Walter, son of Alan the Steward (RMP., p. 6, 49). Retween 1177 and 1199 as Hugh de Paduine he witnessed a confirmation charter by Jocelin, bishop of Glasgow (LCD., p. 235). In 1455 the lands of Pettinain were bestowed on the ancestor of the house of Johnstone of Westraw or Westerhall in reward for his taking the rebel earl of Douglas at the battle of Arnkinholme (OPS., I, p. 140). William Pettinane resided in Cardand in 1684 (Lanark CR.).
