Most probably from ME. petit (AF. petit, 'the little'). A local derivation from Petty in the shire of Inverness appears to be the source of the name in at least one instance. William Petyt was a charter witness in Ayr, c. 1340 (Friars Ayr, p. 10), and Master Duncan Petit or Petyt, archdeacon of Glasgow in 1395 (RMP., p. 92; Egidii, p. 32), appears in the same year and in 1400 as chancellor of Moray (REA., I, p. 201,205). Duncan Petite or Petyt was prebend of the church of Arne in 1415 (Ayr, p. 9), Richard Petit was vicar of Stewynstoun in 1427 (ibid., p. 82), Robyn Petyt was witness in Ayr in 1471 (Friars Ayr, p. 54), and Patrick Pettyt was chaplain in the same town in 1476 (ibid., p. 55). John Pettit is recorded in Edinburgh in 1473 (CDE., p. 48). James Petie, indweller in St. Andrews, 1697 (Edin. App.).

(2) Fergus de Pety in the parish of Fyvy was excommunicated in 1382 (REA. I, p. 213).
