A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Normally an imit. form of Farrow (q.v.); rarely a borrowing of the Egyptian regal title Pharaoh [cp. O.Egyptian Pr-'o, 'great (or royal) house’] “In the New Kingdom it [Pr-'o] became at once personal, and was soon a common term for the king .... documents exist naming the Pr-'o Nk’w, the exact equivalent of ‘Pharaoh-Necho’ .... In Old Coptic ( of the 2nd cent. A.D.) the descendant of Pr-'o is simply Pero, ‘the king.’”—Bible Dict., ed. Hastings, iii. 819.

Surnames of the United Kingdom (1912) by Henry Harrison

This name is borne by a Gipsy tribe, who believe themselves representatives of the great Egyptian dynasty! Mr. Ferguson remarks: "I remember meeting with it in a secluded nook of the Lake district, and wondering much how the king of Egypt had found his way into our quiet valleys. But releasing the name from the associations of the spelling, it is nothing more than the old German name Faro." This our ingenious author connects with the Anglo-Saxon fara, and Old Norse fari, a traveller-not, after all, a bad name for a nomade of Gipsy blood.

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

As an English surname, not derived from the Egyptian name, but from the Old German name Faro; perhaps from faren to travel, Anglo-Saxon fara a traveller. Hence Faramund, a celebrated name among the Francic kings, and the English names Farman and Fearman.

Ludus Patronymicus (1868) by Richard Stephen Charnock
